A new study has named one North East city as the second best place to party in the UK.

Newcastle Upon Tyne is officially the second-best party city in the country according to the study by BonusFinder.

The study broke each city down in terms of the number of pubs and clubs, hotels as well as the average price of a pint.

In all categories, Newcastle scored top marks - the highest being 9.17 for the average hotel price.

This accelerated them to be second on the leaderboard with an overall score of 9.8 out of 10.

They noted the city is great for an affordable night out with "friendly locals".

They added: "The North Eastern city of Newcastle, often referred to as ‘The Toon’ by locals, stands out as one of the most vibrant party cities in the country.

"The TV show Geordie Shore showcases the city’s extensive nightlife scene, featuring its bustling bars and clubs, including the Bigg Market and the Quayside, both renowned hotspots for nightlife entertainment.

"Newcastle scored highly due to its abundance of clubs and bars (6.29 per 10,000 people) and its affordable pint prices, averaging at just £4.

"The city’s affordability extends to other factors as well, such as the average hotel price, which stands at only £84."

Newcastle was narrowly beaten by Brighton which came in first place, 0.2 points higher than the toon.

Brighton was praised for its "wide variety of bars and nightclubs" and scored a perfect 10/10.

In the region, Sunderland came in 31st place, scoring 7.74 out of 10.
