Chris was an English soldier serving in post-war Germany. The country was poor, so the people, but there was some hunger for getting back to democratic live. Chris helped us on the way. He didn’t look at us as ‚Nazis‘, he just was in a good temper. He came to our small flat, sometimes brought some comrades with him, and we had much joyful days. My brother Klaus, 15 years old, became good friends with Chris, so that he even was invited to his wedding. This friendship endured for the whole live; Chris and his family came visiting Wuppertal, and we went on some visits to Sherburn. Now another chapter of private history has been closed.

I worked alongside Chris when he gave up his time to volunteer at the Sherburn Hill &Village primary schools. I always looked forward to his visits to the kitchen, we'd have a good laugh and natter over a cuppa and whatever dessert i was making that day. A truly special gentleman, the kindest of souls with a twinkle in his eye. Love to all his family, especially his beloved Jean. Chris used to truely melt my heart. X

Chris gave so much of his time to Sherburn Primary School at both the village and hill site. He always had time for a chat, a wave and a smile. He was everybody's Grandad and a true friend to us all. Chris will be missed by all the staff and children. He will be forever in our hearts.
